Daily Lessons from Life 08 February 2015 - threats made to PM Lee on Facebook + lodges report against police

"Police investigating threats made to PM Lee on Facebook - CNA 8 February 2015

SINGAPORE: A police report has been filed following several threats made to Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, said a police spokesperson on Sunday (Feb 8), adding that “investigations are ongoing”.
The threats were posted on a Facebook page on Feb 6.
In one of the posts, the writer threatened to shoot the Prime Minister. Another post alleged that a bomb had been left in Changi Airport.
The posts had tagged Mr Lee, as well as the Singapore Police Force."

"Wife of man charged over Thaipusam incident lodges report against police - CNA 8 February 2015

SINGAPORE: The wife of one of the three men charged with disorderly behaviour at the Thaipusam procession has lodged a report against three police officers for allegedly hitting or pushing her during the scuffle on Tuesday (Feb 3).
Below is the police statement:

“In response to media queries, the Police confirmed that it received a report on 4 February 2015 from a 30-year-old Indian female who alleged that three officers had hit or pushed her on 3 February 2015 at Desker Road, during the Thaipusam procession. She is the wife of one of the accused charged for disorderly behaviour at the same procession.

Police take a serious view of any allegation against its officers and will investigate each case thoroughly. However, if the allegations are found to be false, appropriate action, in accordance with our laws, will be taken against any persons found to have furnished false information to the Police.”"

2 news report on Singapore Police Force (SPF). One about investigation of threats against PM Lee; and the other: the wife of one of the 3 offenders who had been charged for disorderly conducts among other; charges the SPF officers for using 'undue force' against her.

Lessons for me are:

1. no room for threats on cyberspace against ANYONE, let alone the PM of a nation. This particular type of 'aggression' over the cyberspace has been going on for quite a while from some of the internet forums I participated in though none were directed at me since I am a nobody and also I abstained (self-censorship for some while some call it responsible freedom of speech) from commenting or attacking others' opinions expressed in each cyberspace forum.

There is no doubt that I subscribe to mutually respectful exchange of points of view. There is NO NEED to argue or debate as in a debating competition or in a court of laws. Each expression of views must be respectful;

2. the Thaipusam incident has created quite a bit of stirs online. A number of ministers of the appropriate race had commented on it and shared their views. I had expressed mine on this incident too.

I mentioned that IF the SPF officers who are carrying out their duties and responsibilities in maintaining laws and orders, they CANNOT be allowed to be assaulted verbally nor physically. However, IF they had behaved inappropriately, they have to answer to the laws too.

In this case of one of the wife of the 3 offenders lodging a report against the 3 police officers using 'force' or 'undue force' on her WILL BE investigated. The process has to be seen to be transparent rather than just 'is transparent'!

The SPF has also rightly pointed out that ANY UNSUBSTANTIATED claims of inappropriate behaviours by the SPF officers WILL be dealt with seriously as well.

May the TRUTH be told and that the public also agree that the TRUTH had been revealed when the outcome of the investigation is published in due course.

3. Personally I hope that the ripple, if any, from this incident dispersed quickly. Priority be given to these cases and the verdicts be made PUBLIC. Let this NOT be a case that let others use as 'something is wrong with the SPF'. As I mentioned in the past, one of the few good things left in our Little Red Dot is: law abiding citizens and clean enforcement personnel. We must guard this with extreme jealousy!

Have a great week ahead to all.
